What distinguishes the design of FERM LIVING from the designs of other Scandinavian brands? In our opinion, it is above all the love of geometric shapes, which bring a breath of freshness and modernity to the, mostly minimalist, Scandi design. Ferm LIVING was founded in 2005 in Denmark by Trine Andersen and started out as a small graphic design studio that grew through the design of wallpaper designs. A few years later, it was time to expand Ferm LIVING's range to include accessories, furniture, lighting, bedding as well as products products for children, bathroom and kitchen.

How did the company get its name? As the founder explains - from the words of her grandmother, who used the phrase 'ferm på fingrene' to express her appreciation for someone who 'had a good hand'. This is because Ferm LIVING pays great attention not only to the appearance of the products in its catalogue, but also to the quality of the materials and the care taken in their manufacture.

Ferm Living – Scandinavian Serenity for Your Home

Imagine a space where every object finds its rightful place, and the warmth of natural materials meets thoughtful minimalism. For nearly two decades, the Ferm Living brand has been defining contemporary Scandinavian design – and doing so with a philosophy that goes far beyond mere aesthetics.

Who is Ferm Living and Why They Matter

Ferm Living is a Danish brand from Copenhagen that has been crafting thoughtful, Scandinavian-style interiors since 2006. Founder Trine Andersen – formerly a creative director at advertising agencies – couldn't find wallpapers that matched her vision, so she designed her own collection. Today, the company offers a wide array of products: from textiles and ceramics to furniture and kitchen accessories.

The name comes from the founder's grandmother's expression – ferm på fingrene – meaning 'good with one's hands' or 'skilled in craftsmanship'. This value remains the cornerstone of the brand, which has earned global acclaim by seamlessly blending aesthetics with functionality.

The Ferm Living Philosophy – Comfort, Balance, and Everyday Rituals

Ferm Living's ethos revolves around creating a home as a sanctuary – a place for rest and mindful living. The brand's products marry design with everyday utility, wholeheartedly embracing the Danish concept of hygge.

The brand encourages slowing down through small rituals: a morning coffee in handcrafted ceramics, dinner by candlelight, an evening bath with your favourite scents. Inspiration primarily stems from nature – organic shapes, ovals, arches, and textures reminiscent of stone, sand, or wood.

As Trine Andersen herself put it: a home is much more than a collection of beautiful objects – it's a space where life unfolds.

The Distinctive Ferm Living Style – Colour Palette, Materials, Details

Ferm Living embodies what's known as soft minimalism – Scandinavian restraint with a generous dose of coziness. It's an ideal choice for those seeking tranquility without the cold sterility.

Colour Palette:

  • Warm beiges and sandy browns
  • Shades of taupe and muted olive
  • Amber, deep navy, dusty roses
  • Subtle pastels instead of vibrant hues

Signature Materials:

  • Solid wood (oak, ash) and veneer
  • Rattan and wicker
  • Organic linen and cotton, wool
  • Recycled PET in textiles
  • Ceramics with a tactile, rough texture

Design details feature geometric yet softened forms with subtle enhancements – stitching, vertical fluting, 3D textures. Brand icons like ceramic vases or Ferm Living lamps demonstrate how functional accessories can also be truly sculptural.

Ferm Living in the Living Room, Dining Room, and Bedroom

The brand designs entire interiors so that products seamlessly flow and complement each other across rooms.

The living room becomes a haven with sofas featuring soft, rounded shapes, coffee tables that combine solid wood tops with stone or rattan bases. Rugs woven from recycled PET provide warmth underfoot, while ceramic planters add organic accents. You'll also find a wide selection of lamps offering diffused light.

Dining rooms in Ferm Living style feature sturdy oak tables with robust, rounded legs, upholstered chairs in linen or wool, and handcrafted ceramic dinnerware. Candleholders – whether brass or ceramic – create an intimate atmosphere for evening gatherings.

In the bedroom, bedding made from GOTS-certified organic cotton takes centre stage, complemented by wool throws and decorative pillows with subtle patterns. Fabric-shaded bedside lamps set a mood conducive to relaxation.

Ferm Living for Kids – Rooms That Grow with Your Little One

Children's room furnishings are a cornerstone of the brand's assortment. Our kids' collections blend safety with imagination-boosting design.

Key elements of the Ferm Living kids' collection:

  • Rugs with animal motifs or world maps made from soft, recycled PET
  • Handcrafted wooden figurines – giraffe, zebra, elephant
  • Rattan doll furniture
  • Textiles with nature-inspired motifs

The educational aspect shines through in wooden puzzles that develop motor skills, Bird Mobile decorations, and animal-shaped music boxes that support bedtime rituals. Diapers and swaddles made from GOTS-certified organic cotton ensure chemical-free contact for sensitive skin.

Ferm Living's Sustainable Development and Ethical Approach

The company consciously prioritizes responsible production. In our assortment, you'll find a series of products marked with the 'RESPONSIBLE' label – in 2021, the percentage of certified products rose to 28%.

Practical examples:

  • PET yarn in rugs and textiles comes from plastic bottles
  • Apple and Pear baskets are hand-woven from jute and rattan
  • Wood is sourced from FSC-certified forests
  • Organic cotton is GOTS-certified

Here, ecology is an integral part of the aesthetic – handcrafted finishes and natural fibres create the characteristic warmth of the products. Living in harmony with nature doesn't mean compromising on design.

How to Bring Ferm Living Style into Your Own Home

Start with small changes. New cushions and throws in taupe or warm beige will instantly refresh your interior. Add ceramic planters or candleholders – it's the simplest way to draw attention to the details.

Next steps:

  • Wallpapers with Scandinavian patterns, harking back to the brand's origins
  • Replacing lamps with models featuring organic shapes
  • One functional, sculptural piece of furniture

Combine new elements with existing ones, repeating colours and textures across different rooms. Remember: it's not about copying a catalogue, but about embracing the philosophy – tranquility, naturalness, conscious choices. This way, you'll create a space that is truly your own.
