Home lighting design shouldn't be limited to just choosing and arranging light fittings in a given interior. The way light is emitted is also crucial, as it determines the mood and atmosphere of the room. Our efficiency, productivity, and well-being are largely dependent on the right lighting. Learn more about types of lighting and different types of lampshades and lamp covers.
For lighting to function well, you need to choose a light fitting that will allow you to match both the intensity and the direction of light emission to the type of interior in which you want to install it.
A direct light source is emitted by light fittings directed downwards. In large rooms, direct lighting most often serves as task lighting, for example, to illuminate a dining table, a kitchen island, or a lounge area. In smaller rooms, such as a bedroom or hallway, they work perfectly as central lighting. The most popular examples of this type of fitting are pendant lamps, lamps over a table, lamps over a mirror, but also desk lamps, wall lamps, or surface-mounted fittings and tracks, which emit light downwards.

In the case of reflected lighting, the light source is directed towards the ceiling or walls and undergoes diffused reflection, which become the brightest surfaces in the entire interior. The result of using reflected lighting is a bright and spacious room. Good light diffusion eliminates shadows and is considered more comfortable than direct lighting, although due to the uniform light emission, it is sometimes seen as too monotonous, or even tiresome. Examples of light fittings that emit this type of lighting include wall lamps, spotlights, floor lamps, or chandeliers directed upwards. This type of lighting works brilliantly in small rooms where an intense light source is not necessary. Moreover, it is used in larger rooms where it plays a decorative role. In such cases, a specific fitting is used to highlight, for example, a picture gallery or a tasteful clock.

Diffused lighting, unlike direct or reflected light, is not concentrated on one part of the space. Diffused light sources illuminate the entire interior evenly and subtly, thus preventing harsh shadows. Diffused lighting creates a gentle, cosy, and atmospheric ambiance in the interior, conducive to relaxation. It is most often used as central lighting in rooms where we relax, primarily in the living room and bedroom, but it also provides an excellent backdrop for the incredibly important spot lighting in the kitchen or study. Living room lamps or a bedroom lamp that emits a diffused light source minimises shadows and protects our eyes from strong glare. Diffused light can be achieved by using large ceiling fittings with diffusing shades, such as a chandelier or ceiling light.

There are several typical types of light fittings, whose construction determines the way light falls and dictates the type of lighting.
These types of lamps are characterised by a simple shade design that widens downwards. Thanks to the enamel inside the shade, the coating is more glassy, which contributes to intensifying the lighting effect. In these types of fittings, light shines downwards, guaranteeing a strong and direct beam of light.
The above description is characteristic of pendant lamps whose shade is made of frosted glass or opaque plastic. The light emitted by these types of lamps is directional and direct, but more delicate and weaker compared to fittings with an enamelled reflector.
These characteristics are met by lamps or chandeliers that generate a strong beam of light directed towards the ceiling, which is then reflected, thereby not illuminating the space as intensely.
Lamps with a completely transparent shade look very striking. They also expose the bulb, so for these types of lamps, it's best to choose decorative bulbs. The light from such shades does not dazzle and perfectly illuminates specific parts of the space. These are great kitchen lamps, ideal for illuminating a worktop or kitchen island.

A globe lamp, thanks to its spherical shape, emits light in all directions. Its intensity depends on the colour and material of the shade. A transparent shade provides an intense beam of light, while a white or frosted one offers softer, more subdued lighting.
This emits very soft light, creating an interesting play of light and shadows in the interior, and openwork lamps are also extremely original and decorative. Depending on the model, they work perfectly in both modern and classic interiors.
Such fittings are ceiling lights made of white plastic or opal glass. This ceiling lighting emits slightly diffused light that evenly illuminates the space.
These criteria are met by spotlights, which are most often made of metal with a glassy surface that enhances light emission. Additionally, with spotlights, you can manually adjust the angle of the light beam.

Lamps are made from various materials, which determine the design, durability, and resilience of the fitting, as well as the lighting effect achieved and the character they lend to interiors.
They surprise with their diverse designs and original forms. Glass lamps are made of various types of glass, which differ in their properties. Lamps made of milky glass diffuse light, making interiors warmer and cosier, while a coloured glass shade beautifully brightens up the space, and a crystal shade slightly refracts the light.
Metal lamps are characterised by a timeless and solid, durable construction. They perfectly complement interiors arranged in a modern and industrial style. These types of lamps are usually minimalist and raw, but they can often also be found in Scandinavian arrangements. An interesting option for metal fittings are designer copper lamps, which introduce a touch of elegance and sophistication to the interior.
Lamps made of plastic are characterised by a light construction and come in a wide range of designs and colours, making them easily adaptable to virtually any interior design style.

Can you imagine a more decorative fitting than a crystal one? Crystal lamps are the best choice for opulent and glittering glamour interiors, as well as retro styles. The crystals, shimmering under the light, create stunning, rainbow-like light reflections. These are fittings that will introduce a touch of elegance and sophistication to any interior.
Lamps with wooden elements bring a cosy and warm atmosphere to interiors. The use of natural material means that these types of fittings perfectly complement Scandinavian or shabby chic interior designs.
A fabric lampshade for a floor lamp gently diffuses light, making the interior cosier and more atmospheric. Such lamps are an ideal choice for the living room or bedroom.
