How to take beautiful holiday photos? 10 simple tips

A holiday is a great opportunity to relax and unwind, but also to bring back wonderful souvenirs in the form of photos. Do you want to know how to take a good picture on holidays? Take a look at our simple tips and tricks that will make all of your photos beautiful and perfect.

How to take a nice photo from your holiday?

While on vacation, we take many photos, trying to capture all of the beautiful and unforgettable moments. Unfortunately, after returning from holiday trips, it often turns out that the photos are no different from last year's ones, and their quality is not the best either. How to take unique photographs and then beautifully display them in photo frames or albums? We have prepared a handful of advice which will help you take inspiring and creative photos.

1. Good light is essential

The least suitable time to take photos is around noon. Then the sun is at its highest point, and the subjects photographed are hard to grasp. As a result, the photos do not look too interesting, and people's faces show strong and contrasting shadows, especially around the eyes and under the nose, spoiling the effect of even the nicest shot.

The best...

landscape photos and portraits are created during the sunrise or the sunset. In photography these moments are defined as golden hours. Why is such a low sun the best? Because the sun's rays pass through a thicker layer of atmosphere, which causes them to disperse and filter out the blue light. The sun is soft and warm, and you get a striking, interesting, golden glow in your photos.

If you cannot take pictures during these hours, you can increase colour saturation or use the sharp shadows cast by the sun and turn the photo into black and white. Great effect guaranteed!

2. Remember about the rule of thirds

When taking pictures on a holiday, pay attention to basic principles of cropping. It is recommended to take a photo of a person, a monument or an object in such a way as to show a little bit of the surroundings. A photograph will look full and thoughtful if, apart from the main element, you also capture a random tourist or a piece of another building in it.

Moreover, it is worth familiarising yourself with one of the main rules of composition in photography, which is the rule of thirds. According to it, the photo should be divided into three parts vertically and horizontally, and all the important elements of the photograph are to be placed at a crossroads or along a line. These are the so-called strong points of the image.

3. Define the horizon

This and the rule of the thirds discussed above are inseperable. The horizon should be in the 2/3 of the height of the photo and not in the middle of it. What does that mean in practice? If you want to take photos of the clouds in the sky, capture them so that they occupy 2/3 of the photo. Instead of clouds, you want to capture the sea and the beach? These elements should be in the 2/3 of the height of the photo as well. If you put the horizon in the middle, the photo will not look too interesting. This rule also works well for photographing buildings and monuments. Do you want your photo to show the lighthouse? Then let the horizon be captured in the 2/3 of the photo height.

Looking at the photo, which implements the rule of thirds and determines the horizon, one can get the impression that everything is in place. It is worth remembering these two rules, because they can significantly affect the value and quality of photography.

4. Diversify the frames and take many photos

While you are on vacation, do not limit yourself to the number of pictures you take! Remember to take photos from different perspectives. You do not know where the sunset will look the most spectacular on the beach? Take a dozen pictures for 15 minutes walking along the shore. On some of the photos, capture a pier, on others, focus on breakwaters or seagulls flying just above the sea. And when you return from your holiday trips, take it easy and choose the best shot.

Also do not just focus on photographing the most famous monuments and obvious places. Try to grasp the characteristics of a country, the lives of its inhabitants or less frequented places. Photos depicting various frames pasted into the album make up a beautiful holiday story.

5. Always keep your camera close at hand

Do you want to bring back beautiful holiday photos that look great in an album, a guest book or photo frames, especially in multi photo frames, that will tell your holiday stories in an attractive way? Always keep the camera close at hand! It is best to carry your camera loosely, just hang it over your shoulder. Then you will avoid missing out on a unique situation. Otherwise, taking the camera out of your bag and removing the protection off of the lens can take such a long time that it would be too late to capture a beautiful shot. The same goes for the phone, if you plan to use it instead of a camera. Always have it at hand.

6. A way to get a spectacular photo? Look for reflections in the water!

Are you taking photos by the water? Look at what you see in its reflection! A chain of mountains by the lake, rocks by the sea, or maybe a building visible in a puddle? The best results are achieved when the reflected object is illuminated and the water surface remains in the shade. Use your reflexions properly and you will get interesting and remarkable photos that will look beautiful in an album.

7. Use the automatic mode

Take a break from using manual mode and go for an automatic mode! In modern cameras the photos taken in the automatic mode look really great. When taking holiday photos, you do not need to have precise control over the aperture, ISO sensitivity or other parameters. Using automation will save you time that you will be able to devote to sightseeing and resting.

8. Turn off the flash

A great idea that will certainly add variety to your photo collection is a night-time photography. The mountains, the sea or the beach seen at night gain a completely different character. Such photographs will surely stand out from other photos in the album. And you may be surprised, but you do not need a flash, which still  remains a weak point of many good cameras. How to take a good photo at night? Turn off the flash, turn on an automatic night mode, and put the camera on a tripod or some flat surface. Equipment extends the exposure time in such a way that every frame in the photograph will be sufficiently clear - even the mountains, the sea or the lake at night.

9. Clean the camera lens

Good light, proper framing and creativity are important points for successful holiday photos, but if you do not take care of the lens, you can be sure that the quality of your photos will not be satisfactory. Even a small spot can spoil the effect of all your holiday photos. That is why you should systematically clean the lens, preferably with a dry microfibre cloth and check it for fuzziness every day.

10. Edit the photos in a graphics software

Before printing out, the photos should be edited in a graphics software. The functions available there will allow you to make your photographs look more attractive and change their various parameters, such as their contrast, colour saturation, sharpness or brightness. You can also add a spectacular frame or put on interesting filters that will enrich and beautify our photos.
