A Short History of the Plate

The plate – a fundamental element of tableware and a staple on every modern table – wasn't always around. It certainly wasn't present at prehistoric campfire dinners or even Roman feasts. In ancient Rome, for instance, liquid dishes were consumed with a spoon-like implement, while other foods were eaten by hand. It's no wonder Romans reclined on one side; their other hand was busy reaching for and eating food! Plates were once a luxury, affordable only to a select few... Thankfully, times have changed, and today we can not only enjoy every meal on a plate, but also choose its size, color, and material.
